Dr Maria Fogdestam Agius is a partner of Westerberg & Partners, Stockholm, since 2020 and heads the firm’s dispute resolution group. She focuses on international dispute settlement, advising and representing states and private entities before international and national courts and tribunals.
Her expertise covers a wide array of public international law topics, including treaty law, state responsibility, international investment protection, sovereign and diplomatic immunities, and corporate human rights obligations. She has extensive experience of international arbitration, in particular under ICSID rules, acting for both claimants and respondents. She has appeared as an advocate before the International Court of Justice in The Hague and the Swedish Supreme Court. She speaks and publishes regularly on various topics of international law and procedure.
Dr Fogdestam Agius holds a Master of Laws in public international law and procedural law and a Doctor of Laws in public international law, both from Uppsala University. Her previous experience includes six years of practice at the public international law firm Volterra Fietta in London, teaching at Uppsala University, acting as a clerk and junior judge at a Swedish district court, and an internship with the International Criminal Court.
